Policy On Academic Honesty

Asia Pacific International College (APIC) is dedicated to academic ideals of education, research and community service.

The College endeavours to:

  • provide innovative and transformative cost effective educational opportunities for individual students at both undergraduate and graduate level, including but not limited to formal award courses, professional development courses, open learning courses and seminars, conferences, workshops and any other course that is deemed appropriate;
  • provide holistic solutions for organisational capability and performance development and enhancement;
  • accelerate the acquisition and beneficial application of knowledge at both individual and corporate levels through research, teaching, training and consulting activities;
  • contribute to the world of learning and the extension of knowledge;
  • provide community service in core areas of expertise; and
  • co-operate with other Australian and overseas organisations concerned with similar objects as APIC.

APIC will emphasise the acquisition of general and specialist knowledge and it will emphasise the development of professional skills and a professional mindset. The latter will be based on the values that APIC subscribes to:

  • academic freedom, high ethics and a full respect of the law;
  • academic values and ideals shall at all times take precedence over all other considerations;
  • a respect of individual privacy, rights and freedoms;
  • the provision of a stimulating environment for staff and students in which to engage in scholarly activity, enjoy collegial interactions, develop respect and serve the community; and
  • a commitment to customer value, efficiency and cordiality.

To achieve its mission students and staff at APIC are required to behave professionally, to act honestly, ethically and with integrity in their dealings with one another, and with APIC´s customers and the public at large. All APIC students and staff are required to observe the principles of academic and professional honesty in full.

Each individual student or staff member is obliged to consciously ensure that his/her acts or omissions do not amount to breaches of academic honesty or constitute plagiarism whether working alone or as part of a team. In addition, the College requires all staff and students to report any perceived instances of plagiarism. All staff members, associates, consultants and students are required to comply with all APIC regulations, policies and procedures, copies of which are found at: www.apicollege.edu.au.

APIC General Regulations define all academic processes and procedures that must be followed by all students and staff members in all academic tasks. Should there be any reported instance of academic dishonesty the person concerned is required to report the matter confidentially in accordance with Steps 1 to 3 of the following process and in line with Section 11 of the APIC General Regulations (pages 36-40).

Process to follow for reporting academic dishonesty and plagiarism

Step 1

Students or members of the public are invited to provide any information and or evidence of academic dishonesty and plagiarism confidentially to the relevant Dean of School where the student is enrolled, within one week of becoming aware of the information or evidence, or if the Dean is the academic directly involved with the teaching of the course concerned, they should report the information or evidence to the Director of Academic Management Office, who will act as if he/she was the Dean in that instance. The Dean will make the decision on College´s behalf applying the General Regulations and the associated processes and procedures. The relevant Dean of School will notify the person who has complained of any action taken or any decision made by them in relation to the information supplied. If the person is satisfied that the matter has been fairly and thoroughly dealt with no further action needs to be taken by them.

Step 2

Should the person presenting the information feel that the determination is not in line with the General Regulations or the matter has not been thoroughly investigated they will report their concern in writing confidentially to the Registrar who is also Director of Academic Management Office. The Registrar will review the matter and will notify the student of any action taken and will provide reasons for any decision made by them in relation to the alleged instances of dishonesty. If the matter is dealt with satisfactorily in this Step no further action needs to be taken by the person making the complaint.

Step 3

Should Steps 1 to 2 fail to deal with an instance of alleged academic dishonesty, the person supplying the relevant information and or evidence can apply to the College Principal to request the matter be referred to the College Board of Directors for determination. The Board shall appoint an independent (external) adviser to review the matter. The Board will make its own recommendation based on the report of the adviser as well as the decisions made or actions taken in previous Steps. The recommendation shall be referred to the College Principal who will make the final determination, which shall be final.

Warning: making false allegations (i.e. claims or information that are known to be untrue or deliberately fabricated or intentionally altered) or supplying fabricated or forged evidence of academic dishonesty is against the law and the offenders will be expelled from the College and referred to police and judicial system to deal with appropriately.
